Comments: Honeygold grown at Minnesota Harvest are among the best-flavored grown anywhere. Very tender for handling and very susceptible to bruising, though.

Parentage: Unknown
Size & Color: Shaped like a miniature Red Delicious, about 2"; complex, variable red to dark maroon striping, stippling, and blush over yellow-orange.
Flesh & Flavor: Crisp, very juicy; SWEET! with deep, tangy honey flavor reminiscent of Starking Delicious, the best-flavored Red Delicious ever grown.
Uses: Eating. Other uses not attempted yet.
Keeping: Undetermined at this time.
Comments: Great-eating crab apple with lots of SUGAR in it.

Size & Color: Toward large; very bright yellow with prominent ripeness bumps
Flesh & Flavor: Coarse and hard; has Haralson ground flavor and acidity with Honeygold flavor and sweetness
Uses: Eating and all other uses
Keeping: Still crackin' hard on April 15
Comments: This is a premiere apple, featuring superior texture and flavor.

Comments: Coloring is so solid they often look artifiical, like a lacquered decorative Christmas apple

Size & Color: Large to huge; smooth, green to creamy, pearly skin
Flesh & Flavor: Dense, fine, tight, crunchy; Fireside-like flavor
Uses: Eating, pies (some of the richest pies on earth)
Keeping: Until April, mellowing, of course
Comments: Our description of NW Greening is unlike anyone else's, because of our soil. Probably the best-tasting NWG ever grown come from Minnesota Harvest.

Flesh & Flavor: Crunchy, great chew; tart with a Haralson-type ground flavor

Keeping: Keeps well until about mid-April
Comments: Homely, but, like Chestnut Crab, prettier when you know how good it tastes. Unfortunately, very susceptible to fireblight.

Parentage: MN 447 x Northern Spy
Size & Color: Smallish, blocky; full deep burgundy blush
Flesh & Flavor: Dense, hard, crisp, juicy, spicy, rosy, some starch, not a typical apple flavor
Uses: Eating, cider
Keeping: Well-named, very good keeper, crisp thru February
Comments: A secret that's too well-kept. Deserves far more attention. The only identified parent of Honeycrisp.

Malinda
Origin: Vermont, 1860
Parentage: Unknown
Size & Color: Small, conical with sheep's nose; deep, rich yellow with red spots possible
Flesh & Flavor: Dry, dense, substantive flesh; mild, pear-like flavor
Uses: Eating, pies, but flavor comes alive as dried apples ("schnitz")
Keeping: Very long, through April (6 months), mellowing throughout
Comments: Parent of Haralson, Chestnut Crab, Sweet Sixteen, Beacon, Keepsake, and Honeycrisp (through Keepsake). University of Vermont says, "... a variety that lives on today as a major foundation of the University of Minnesota's breeding program." We say, "Thank you, Vermont."
